ITB: What Will Eagles Do with Starters in Final Game?
The Philadelphia Eagles find themselves with a chance to make history entering the final regular season game, but will they take advantage of the opportunity or keep their sights set on a bigger goal?
On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan dove into the current state of the team and whether they should rest their starters.
Offensive Line
Geoff Mosher: “The Eagles are a little bit unique, they have six backup offensive linemen so they could, if they wanted to, rest their entire starting offensive line and still be able to start a completely fresh set of backups and have one backup in the game.”
Saquon Barkley
Mosher: “I would be shocked if they played Saquon Barkley in the season finale. There’s almost, to me, no shot of that happening…I do think there are some immortal records worth going after, but this is about winning the Super Bowl, and you can’t win it without Saquon Barkley. You don’t even want this guy twisting up his ankle a little bit, you want him at peak maximum health.”
Adam Caplan: “He’s coming off a 31 carry game…he is the foundation of this offense…Without him, they’re not winning the Super Bowl.”
Discipline
Mosher: “We saw Sydney Brown get disqualified from a game, we have seen Nick Sirianni have his outburst, C.J. Gardner-Johnson…Jalen Carter, a guy who I think we can fairly say is a little bit marked now, they’re now looking for him to see if he’s going to do any extra circular stuff…my concern is they have reputations now and in close games with penalties, the refs always want to be part of the game.”
Caplan: “Two games ago, they had 10 accepted penalties. This goes to the lack of discipline sometimes. You can’t have that in the playoffs.”
Dallas Goedert
Mosher: “Talk about a long layoff. Even if he’s ready, he’s not going to play in the season finale, so it’s going to be about six weeks between games when he finally gets on the field.”
Caplan: “It’s one thing being able to work out when you’re on injured reserve. Getting your game condition is just totally different.”
Jalen Hurts
Mosher: “The new format helps him and the Eagles because they have to play in the first round whereas the number two seed used to get a bye. If this were the old format, Hurts would be missing the last two regular season games and then having a bye so you would have four weeks in between setting foot on field for a game.”
