Observations from Home Field Night Practice

by

PHILADELPHIA — The Eagles on Tuesday evening held their lone open practice of the summer, under the bright lights of Lincoln Financial Field. The team put on a show for the over 45,000 fans in attendance, providing plenty of splash plays over the two-hour session.

On Wednesday, the Eagles will hold their final training camp practice of the summer ahead of Friday’s preseason finale.

The following Eagles didn’t participate on Day 16: OT Markel Bell (thumb/leg), CB Jakorian Bennett (knee), TE Grant Calcaterra (back), G Landon Dickerson (not injury related/rest), CB Jonathan Jones (shoulder), TE Eli Stowers (hamstring) and S Cole Wisniewski (concussion).

Veteran OLB Jonathan Greenard (pectoral strain) remains on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Limited for the Eagles was CB Mac McWilliams (shoulder).

Transaction update: On Monday evening, the Eagles signed DB Jaylen Mahoney and RB Jordan Mims.

Let’s get to the observations.

Jalen Hurts

*First, let’s start with QB Jalen Hurts. Early in practice, he had a chance to hook up with WR DeVonta Smith deep down the middle of the field. The pass, however, was underthrown, allowing CB Quinyon Mitchell to gain position and collect a pass breakup. Hurts, rolling to his right, delivered a cross-body strike over the middle to WR Dontayvion Wicks. He targeted Wicks again shortly thereafter, this time on a heave into the corner of the end zone. Mitchell provided sticky coverage on the play but ultimately, the pass was overthrown.

Mitchell, by the way, made a diving attempt at an interception, after a Hurts throw ricocheted off the hands of WR Darius Cooper. That’s a ball Cooper usually reels in. Still, Mitchell, the Eagles’ All-Pro cornerback had an active evening. Tough as nails.

During a red zone period, Hurts delivered a well-placed ball to RB Saquon Barkley, running a wheel route, in the corner of the end zone despite pretty good coverage from a LB Zack Baun.

*Daily QB2 update: Andy Dalton was first up with the second unit. Tanner McKee, fresh off an encouraging performance against the Patriots, got the nod on Monday, so the rotations continued. During an early team period, Dalton zipped in a pass that was too tall for Cooper. DB Michael Carter II, the defender in coverage, had a better shot at reeling it in. Dalton did, however, connect with WR Elijah Moore for a touchdown on that same series.

McKee piloted a series that resulted in a Will Shipley touchdown plunge. On the two-point try, McKee attempted to fit one in the back of the end zone to WR Hollywood Brown, but CB Kelee Ringo was there for the pass breakup. McKee delivered a pass on the series that was a bit behind TE E.J. Jenkins, but the 6-foot-6 target hauled it in and took a thud from S Andre’ Sam that knocked him off balance.

Eagles

*Fresh off a strong finish to joint practices, CB Riq Woolen put on a show for those in attendance. With DT Mojo Ojomo applying pressure up the middle, Woolen undercut a Hurts throw to rookie WR Makai Lemon for his first of two interceptions on the night. On the next one, which came later in the session, Woolen was in coverage on Smith. Context is important here, as Hurts again faced pressure and couldn’t get much on the throw. He floated a pass to Smith along the sideline that Woolen broke on, snatching the ball away and taking it the other way for six. Woolen’s previous background as a wide receiver really showed up here. Strong hand-eye coordination.

O-line configurations

First team (L-R): LT Jordan Mailata, LG Drew Kendall, C Cam Jurgens, RG Tyler Steen, RT Lane Johnson*

Johnson began team drills but appeared to tweak something early in the session. He watched most of the two-hour practice from the sideline. Veteran Fred Johnson stepped in as the replacement at RT.

Kendall, I thought, did a nice job filling in for Dickerson at LG. As mentioned here previously, Kendall looks appreciably stronger relative to last season and is playing at around 305 pounds, which should help him at guard. The second-year pro has received valuable reps this summer. Jake Majors briefly repped with the first team at center late in the session, with Jurgens returning on the ensuing series.

Second team (L-R): LT Myles Hinton, LG Micah Morris, C Jake Majors, RG Willie Lampkin, RT Cameron Williams

Note: Veteran Michael Jordan also worked in at RG. I paid attention to Jake Majors a fair amount, as he’s a player that is on the roster bubble. I thought he had some bright moments. He has come on a bit within the past couple of weeks.

*Lemon found the end zone on a play in which he ran a wheel route out of the backfield. He was wide-open and strolled into the end zone. While it’s clear, and should be expected, that Lemon is working on establishing chemistry and making up for lost time, plays like that can build confidence. Hurts went right back to Lemon following an incompletion on the previous play in which he looked to lead the receiver into the end zone. Mitchell was in coverage.

*DeVonta Smith makes the extraordinary appear ordinary, perhaps best illustrated on a pair of receptions during team period. Working against Mitchell, Smith ran a sharp curl route, working back to Hurts and showcasing strong hands at the catch point to complete the play. Smith also came up big for Hurts on a tight window throw with Woolen closing, attacking the football and picking up some yards after the catch.

*The punt returners this evening: WR Britain Covey, DB Cooper DeJean, Lemon. The primary kick returners were RBs Shipley and Tank Bigsby.
