Room for Improvement?
ITB: State of the Safeties
The biggest question for the 2026 Philadelphia Eagles roster lies in the backend of the defense.
On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan concluded their depth chart series with a look at the safety room.

Andrew Mukuba
Geoff Mosher: “Some of the concerns we had going into the year was his ability to be durable and hold up because he was a thin-framed guy. The one thing about his tape was he played tough. But he got hurt like someone who doesn’t have a lot of body frame to him and that has to be a concern in year two.”
Adam Caplan: “He broke his ankle. He is expected to be ready to participate in their offseason program. How much is up to interpretation.”
Michael Carter II
Caplan: “He took a massive paycut. He has talent, pretty good leader from what I understand talking to someone from the Jets about him.”
Mosher: “A guy like Michael Carter II, you’re trying to find out if he can play that position. Can he be next to Mukuba, can you have two guys who are essentially nickels playing as your safety? It wouldn’t shock me if Carter was the first-team safety [at OTAs] just to get the reps in as Vic (Fangio) is trying to go through an evaluation process here.”
Brandon Johnson
Mosher: “When they played him in that season finale, they played him at safety despite the fact they were really looking at him at nickel throughout training camp.”
Marcus Epps
Caplan: “If the guy that they sign or trade for is clearly a starter, I don’t see any way (Epps) is making it. It’s not like they’re paying him anything. He has a roster bonus for being active the first game.”
