Stay Slay?

ITB: Intel on OC, DB Contracts

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl champion offseason continues with a key coaching hire and decisions awaiting on major players in the secondary.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan provided intel on the new offensive coordinator and evaluated the current defensive back room.

Darius Slay

GETTY IMAGES: The Philadelphia Eagles will have to make a decision on whether to bring back Darius Slay, the oldest CB in the league.

Kevin Patullo

Geoff Mosher: “He plans to keep elements in place from what Kellen Moore brought to the offense last year. He’s obviously going to put his own fingerprint on it, but that’s a good scenario that you have somebody who comes from both the Nick Sirianni tree but also worked in concert with Moore to be able to keep those concepts in place.”

Adam Caplan: “This will be Kevin Patullo and Jalen Hurts’ fifth year working together. Kevin was part of the big breakout season for Hurts in 2022…you now have continuity, that’s important.”

Mosher: “Patullo is a first time playcaller. That scares people because it makes them think there is a potential for a Brian Johnson deal all over again.”

Caplan: “I understand that people are concerned that it’s Nick Sirianni’s guy…patience has to be shown.”

Darius Slay

Caplan: “Slay is owed a total of $16 million. He has an option bonus which is not guaranteed, they have to make that decision shortly…ideally, you want someone younger, but there’s really no answer.”

Cooper DeJean

Mosher: “When you have a player like (Cooper) DeJean, who you know is a very good athlete, I think it’s easier to envision moving him outside because it’s a little bit easier to find yourself a high-end nickel than to find a high-end outside corner.”

Reed Blankenship

Caplan: “The contract is outdated, he’s on the final of his extension, just over $1 million fully guaranteed. You have to take care of him. He deserves an extension.”

I don’t like the idea of moving DeJean to outside because it wastes one of his best traits: tackling. Half of what made him so good this year was his ability to tackle in space better than pretty much anyone. You can find a quality cover corner in the nickel easier than an outside, but we will never see another tackler like DeJean play nickel. So many teams use the short passing game as a way to get explosive plays by just shaking one single tackle. Taking that away from teams devastated them this year. You just could not make plays in the short passing game against us this year. DeJean is the reason.
