Eagles Bolster TE Depth With Goedert Hurt
PHILADELPHIA – The Eagles continued their roster maneuvering to atone for injuries, filling out the 53-man roster Wednesday with veteran tight end C.J. Uzomah.
The team had an opening on the 53 after waiving wide receiver Parris Campbell, who rejoined the practice squad.
Uzomah, who following Sunday’s win in Baltimore exhausted his three practice squad elevations, bolsters a razor-thin tight end room in which Grant Calcaterra is currently the team’s only healthy player.
The status of starter Dallas Goedert, who suffered a knee injury Sunday, has yet to be determined.
Head coach Nick Sirianni on Wednesday called Uzomah “a great teammate.”
“As you look back and you kinda talk to the teams he’s been on, as we got him here on this team, everyone says the same thing,” Sirianni said. “What a great teammate. I think you could ask his teammates, particularly in the tight end room, to what type of guy he is, and they’ll say the same thing.
“Great teammate, glue guy. And he’s done some nice things on special teams and he’s taken advantage on some of the plays that he’s had. He had a really good play in four-minute the other day, that he came through and lead through on a block on a really good player. He was able to get movement there.”
Siriainni added that Uzomah “just brings veteran reliability” and brings guys together while also providing stellar offensive play.
“He’s had some big production, where we know if we need to throw him the ball, he can do something with it and make plays,” he said. “And what he does as a blocker.”
The 31-year-old Uzomah, who has appeared in 109 games (82 starts) over his 10-year career, has accounted for 39 offensive snaps and 13 on special teams over his three games.
His veteran presence and blocking prowess should be a welcome addition to active roster. The Goedert injury will also be worth monitoring to see whether the team waits it out or opts for short-team injured reserve.
If the latter, look for the Eagles’ other practice squad tight end, E.J. Jenkins, to get the promotion.
