Pads On

ITB: Camp Standouts as Competition Ramps Up

by

Now in full pads, the Philadelphia Eagles’ training camp has reached a new level of intensity.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher provided intel on camp standouts through the first couple of weeks as well as their latest transaction.

Nick Gates

Adam Caplan: “He is a center/guard. His best position is guard, to put it mildly. That is what we were told. The word in scouting circles is he is an old school tough guy.”

Geoff Mosher: “Here is a guy in Gates who has played center. We go back to the fact that he has snapped the ball and after Cam Jurgens, they don’t have a ton of guys who have a long history of doing that.”

Jalen Hurts

Mosher: “The big takeaway from Jalen Hurts so far is not one of his passes has yet to find the opponent’s hands.”

Caplan: “He has made some really big-time throws. I’m not saying it’s a 2022-level offseason, but he looks really good. The more he practices under Kellen Moore, the less he will probably run on his own.”

Will Shipley

Caplan: “You see the short area juice, he brings it. He has very good hands, a running backs coach told me. We have seen that so far, he catches it really nice and is off and running. He has short area explosion, that is important because the backs will catch the football in this offense.”

Jalen Carter

Caplan: “We don’t talk about Jalen Carter enough. There is a saying in personnel that low man wins, his ability at his size to get lower and move people is something else. This is a special football player in terms of talent.”

Mosher: “There was a play I was told about in which Jalen Carter ragdolled Mekhi Becton. Think about how big Mekhi Becton is. The type of leverage and strength to be able to do that, that is pretty special.”

Quinyon Mitchell

Caplan: “He has played nickel inside, nickel outside, outside in base, first-team nickel inside. He is so smooth, doesn’t back down.”

Mosher: “I get the same thing from talking to personnel people and coaches. If you are going to take a guy from a small school, the one thing the guy has to do is dominate the competition that he is playing week in and week out and there is no question when you spoke to people about Quinyon Mitchell that he dominated the competition.”
