ITB Postgame Live: Eagles Overcome Major Adversity

by

The Philadelphia Eagles showed resilience, overcoming turnovers, injuries, and questionable coaching decisions in a 15-12 victory on the road against the New Orleans Saints.

On the Week 3 edition of “Inside The Birds Postgame Live,” Geoff Mosher, Adam Caplan and Andrew DiCecco reacted to the team’s comeback win.

Saquon Barkley

GETTY IMAGES: Philadelphia Eagles RB Saquon Barkley had another impressive outing in the team’s 15-12 win over the New Orleans Saints.

Nick Sirianni

Geoff Mosher: “The Eagles won this game despite some really bad situational coaching from Nick Sirianni. There are decisions you have to make to put your team in the best position to succeed and I don’t feel like those were made today by Sirianni.”

Andrew DiCecco: “Right before the half on that fourth-and-one, you hand it off to Saquon (Barkley) when you’re at the 15-yard line and you have the backup right side of your o-line…I don’t understand why you would do that in that moment. And then in the second half you should have taken the points also at another part.”

Adam Caplan: “How do you go for a 60-yard field goal but then you pass up a 54-yarder? He contradicts himself, that’s bad coaching.”

Jalen Carter

Caplan: “Jalen Carter was the MVP of the defense, he was incredible.”

Mosher: “On the Saints first drive, they were able to move the ball and it kind of looked bad but they got into a third down, Jalen Carter got the pressure…and then on their third possession they go three-and-out because Carter again got disruptive and rattled Derek Carr.”

Quinyon Mitchell

Mosher: “I thought Mitchell acquitted himself fairly well in a difficult atmosphere and showed you why they are keeping him on the outside.”

DiCecco: “He’s a really confident player, short term memory which is a critical aspect to playing the cornerback position, especially for a young player. He really met the moment and it has been a continuation of training camp. They’re not going to be rotating him in and out for Isaiah Rodgers or Kelee Ringo, that’s his spot.”

Jalen Hurts

Mosher: “I think it’s a bigger development for him that, for the most part, he stayed in the pocket. He trusted his protection and did not bail nearly as much as we saw him do against the Falcons. That helps you see Saints defenders fall into each other and Dallas Goedert running wide open across the middle and those kinds of plays are the difference of winning and losing sometimes.”

Offensive Line

Caplan: “The most surprising thing was the protection. I cannot believe with Lane Johnson out early, and then (Mekhi) Becton leaves with that finger injury…Tyler Steen gets thrown in there with Fred Johnson and I just could not believe on the road that they held up like that.”

Saquon Barkley

Mosher: “There were a couple of first or second downs where I thought you might want to get Barkley the ball a little more because he was doing a decent job. On the road, down linemen, I kind of thought they might try to give him the ball a little more on early downs to set up passing later.”

DiCecco: “The running game did not look very promising early in that game, but you started to see the belief that Saquon had in the line in front of him, they kept going for it and eventually something broke.”
