‘Familiarity There’

ITB: Which Free Agents Are the Best Fits for the Fangio Defense?

With key free agents on defense set for bigger contracts, the Philadelphia Eagles will have to explore the market.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher looked into potential fits for the Eagles’ defense in free agency.

Dre’Mont Jones

Adam Caplan: “He’s the guy right now to me. I know it just never worked in Seattle. Two of his guys in his career were Vic Fangio, who was his head coach in Denver for a bit and his d-coordinator in Seattle for a short period was Clint Hurtt. They’re both in Philly now.”

Geoff Mosher: “A lot of familiarity there. I think he makes a lot of sense. When I poked around him, people feel like his best position is a three-technique which is what Milton Williams played…Is he looking for a one-year short term deal to have a really nice year with a good plan so he can try to make another big contract after or it or is he just wanting to win and willing to sign for two or three somewhere else? He’s only 28-years-old.”

Khalil Mack/Demarcus Lawrence

Mosher: “I definitely get Chris Long vibes out of Khalil Mack and Demarcus Lawrence, guys who are in the twilight of their career but might just have enough juice left in a rotation like how Chris Long came to the Eagles…I just don’t know if you want Lawrence because he’s a former Cowboy and that has never worked out for the Eagles.”

Oren Burks

Mosher: “When you go through these names and you think you have what you need in Oren Burks, can they make this work? It just makes more sense than some of the names that are out there.”

Caplan: “He did a great job…he has ideal length.”

Stephon Gilmore

Caplan: “Gilmore is the oldest starting corner, he’s about nine months older than (Darius) Slay. He can still play…He’s more of a man [coverage] guy, that’s why Buffalo moved on from him.”

Mosher: “I did see the Vikings played more zone behind their blitzes last year because he was a little older, so he may be more suited for the zone/man responsibilities that you see in a Vic Fangio defense. If your choice is between bringing back Slay and signing Gilmore to a one-year deal and Gilmore’s less money, you may want Gilmore.”
