Maddox Cut
Eagles Release Slot Cornerback
The Philadelphia Eagles have made another expected move to maximize their cap space in the 2024 free agency period.
Slot cornerback Avonte Maddox has been released, per ESPN.
More roster moves: The Philadelphia Eagles are releasing CB Avonte Maddox after six seasons, per sources. He had a $9.6 million salary cap hit for 2024. The two sides will keep talking and are open to a reunion. pic.twitter.com/xXuWctNQ1v

In addition to his $9.6 million cap hit if he stayed at his current salary, Maddox was due $7 million in cash, a number difficult to justify with his unfortunate injury history.
When healthy, Maddox is one of the most reliable nickel cornerbacks in the NFL. Injuries have severely shortened his previous two seasons with just nine games played in 2022 and four in ’23.
A fourth-round pick from Pittsburgh in the 2018 draft, Maddox became a contributor in his rookie season, showing versatility in his ability to play the slot, safety, and outside corner.
Now, Maddox will look for offers on the open market with a door open to return to Philadelphia on a cheaper price.
The 27-year-old is the second starter in the Eagles’ secondary to be released over the past week, joining former All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.
