‘Little More Physicality’
ITB: What New Cowboys Regime Brings to the Table
The Philadelphia Eagles’ primary NFC East rival is reloading with a new system for 2025.
On the first of a four-part series on “Inside The Birds,” legendary NFL Films analyst Greg Cosell previewed the Dallas Cowboys.
Brian Schottenheimer
Greg Cosell: “Brian Schottenheimer has always done well where he has been with quarterbacks. But it has always been part of a pretty balanced offense…There’s no question in my mind that he wants a little more physicality and his offense and he wants the run game to be a determining factor.”
Run Game
Cosell: “I think they are going to be more of a gap scheme, duo type of run game than zone run team. They drafted Tyler Booker from Alabama with their first pick. He is not a zone-type guard, he is a power player. Cooper Beebe is much more that player as well. Javonte Williams is much more effective as a downhill, gap-scheme runner.”
Wide Receivers
Cosell: “(George) Pickens is a true boundary ‘X.’ CeeDee Lamb is really at his best as a movement player.”
Run Defense
Cosell: “One thing I remember when [Matt Eberflus] was in Indianapolis was he did a lot of things with his fronts that were a little different…there’s a couple of players that have to player better and one is Mazi Smith.”
Secondary
Cosell: “They got Kaair Elam. The strength of what he does is man coverage, he’s not a good zone player…having (Trevon) Diggs back healthy who is a really good man corner as well, they drafted Shavon Revel, he’s a pure press-man corner. Is this going to be a high percentage man defense even though Eberflus has not been a high percentage man defensive coordinator? The players they have fit that better.”
