ITB: Motion New Wrinkle in Eagles Offense

by

The Philadelphia Eagles will be taking on a major philosophical shift on the offensive side of the ball with a new coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher highlighted the offense’s coaching staff.

Adam Caplan: “I talked to Cowboys coaches who worked with Kellen as a player and then on the staff. They knew that even though he was only 31 and calling plays that he could do it.”

Geoff Mosher: “The expectation is that he is going to bring his spread philosophies. This should look more like a movement, spread offense than a traditional west coast offense.”

Caplan: “A coach very close to Kellen told me that if he has enough receivers that he trusts, he would be top three in 10 personnel. That is how much he wants to go spread, but you can’t do it if you don’t have the personnel.”

Doug Nussmeier

Caplan: “He is known in coaching circles for details on footwork and mechanics. He is very well respected by his peers. He recruited to the Jalen Hurts to Florida, he didn’t go there, but he knows him. He worked one year with Jeff Stoutland in 2012.”

Mosher: “It is hard not to see the similarities between the resumes and pedigrees of Doug Nussmeier and Brian Johnson. Johnson did a good job two years ago as the quarterbacks coach. Both come from the college ranks from spread programs.”

Aaron Moorehead

Caplan: “I talked to a coach who worked with him in Vanderbilt. He said he is really smart and detailed. People knock him because who has he developed? People criticize him saying he is just a survivor, but you can’t put it all on him, the Eagles have missed on a bunch of receivers since he has been here.”

Mosher: “At this stage of the game, what we can say is I don’t know if he has hurt the Eagles, but I don’t know if he has helped them, I think he has just been a wide receivers coach and nothing really jumps out as far as really good or really bad.”

Jeff Stoutland

Mosher: “Jeff Stoutland has never been a really big fan of a lot of motion in the offense. That is important because he is the run game coordinator and Kellen Moore use motion not just for pass, but also in the run game.”

Caplan: “There is going to be motion, I can bet the house on that. Stoutland is going to have to handle it. Stout has had that run game coordinator title since 2018, he designs the run game and is really good at that.”

Kevin Patullo

Mosher: “He is the Associate Head Coach and Pass Game Coordinator, but if we are being objective, you have to wonder if he is able to fulfill [the titles] because you have a new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Kevin Patullo has been Nick Sirianni’s right hand man, has been a big part of the passing offense, and like Sirianni comes up through the traditional west coast pedigree.”

Caplan: “He was super involved in gameplanning. Patullo has coaching experience with quarterbacks and receivers. They don’t have an assistant receivers coach so he can pitch in there.”
