Remarkable Run
ITB Postgame Live: Defensive Dominance and Elite Running Game on Display
The Philadelphia Eagles leaned on their winning formula of a strong run game in defense on the way to their eighth straight victory, this time against the reigning NFL MVP.
On the Week 13 edition of “Inside The Birds Postgame Live,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan gave their biggest takeaways from the game.
Defense
Geoff Mosher: “They held the second-highest scoring team to basically 12 points and they did this going into the game without Brandon Graham, Bryce Huff, Darius Slay, and then losing several players, and still frustrated Lamar Jackson. Derrick Henry is always going to have a good game, but they bottled him up…and they were hitting hard, I thought that was really big.”
Adam Caplan: “They did a good job on Henry, no backbreaking runs on him. Did Jackson have some to break their backs on third down? Yes, but they didn’t let it ruin them. These backbreaking runs can demoralize a defense, but it didn’t affect them. This is one of the two youngest defenses in the National Football League and they are handling it so well.”
Jalen Carter
Caplan: “He is putting together a remarkable season. He is basically unblockable right now.”
Mosher: “He is an absolute headache for offensive lines and offensive coordinators…I’m not sure if he came off the field.”
Secondary
Mosher: “I can’t remember the last time we saw a blown assignment, the last time an elite receiver beat a corner or safety by three steps and had an easy touchdown. They play their leverages correctly, their schemes correctly. I’m going to chalk this up to Vic (Fangio) and also the extended practices in training camp. It feels like everybody knows not only their assignment, but also what the assignment of their person next to them is supposed to be.”
Jalen Hurts
Mosher: “Jalen Hurts had some designed runs. You could tell the Ravens were clued in on (Saquon) Barkley…so there were some RPOs and designed runs by Jalen that loosened up the Ravens defense just enough to give some ability to then give the ball to A.J. Brown. Jalen had to throw those balls in between a couple of defenders, there were three today.”
Saquon Barkley
Mosher: “You knew after the Ravens missed two field goals and could not get back in the lead, you knew Saquon Barkley was going to break one. You’re just waiting for it.”
Caplan: “This is the story of the team; they just stay with the run.”
