Bad to Worse

Defensive Disasterclass While Offense Continues to Struggle

by

Almost nothing went right for the Philadelphia Eagles in a primetime Monday night matchup on the way to their fifth consecutive loss.

On the Week 7 edition of “Inside the Birds Postgame,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan broke down the 38-21 defeat at the hands of the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys.

Saquon Barkley

Geoff Mosher: “He had that big 29-yard run on the first drive. He was actually disappointed it was that open because you saw him burst through the hole and get yanked a little bit from behind, that’s where he started to feel it in his back…That wound up hurting him.”

Adam Caplan: “Barkley played only 10 snaps, a very productive 10 snaps…He pulled himself out of the game, but he was going to be on a reduced play count anyway. (Nick) Sirianni did say he thought he would be able to play more.”

Tanner McKee

Caplan: “Tanner McKee really regressed as the game went along. He has a very bad mechanical flaw, which we saw in training camp.”

Mosher: “He did not have a consistent enough game…Most of the game was quick game, which I understand they have had issues up front, once the game settled in and you realized that you had decent pass protection, this is one of the worst defenses in the NFL you’re going against, you have to drive the ball a little bit. There were too many passes short of the sticks, crossing yards for five yards. His yards-per-attempt was under seven against one of the worst pass defenses.”

Pass Protection

Mosher: “I want to take it with a grain of salt. We talked about how bad Dallas’ defense is, their pass rush isn’t good. They did not put the whole six, seven, eight guys at the line of scrimmage to try to break down the protection schemes. They played conservatively. I’m still not 100% sold that this pass pro is that good. When they play the Commanders, who will do all of that stuff at the line of scrimmage, we’ll get a better idea of whether they can block it up when they don’t exactly see it coming.”

Jalen Carter/Jordan Davis

Mosher: “How much money are they paying to their two defensive tackles to sit there and get no pass rush and get steamrolled in the run game?”

Caplan: “Their run fits were so embarrassingly bad, the gaps that they gave up.”

Riq Woolen

Caplan: “Ball location was not good. He has an issue with throttling down because he’s over 6’4. If you have a receiver who gets in and out of breaks quickly, he just can’t stop and start quickly.”
