Deep Depth?

ITB: Do Eagles Have Enough Depth on Defense?

by

The 2024 Philadelphia Eagles defense is set to look very different from previous seasons.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher discussed the team’s defensive depth and where the undrafted rookie class could fit.

Gabe Hall

Adam Caplan: “He is a d-tackle out of Baylor who has been a chronic underachiever. Even with all of that, he should have been drafted…this dude is gifted, they need d-tackles. They have no proven depth. This kid has a chance here.”

Geoff Mosher: “When you have that type of height and wingspan as an interior d-lineman, you can make it very difficult on quarterbacks to see across the middle. You narrow lanes that way.”

Andre’ Sam

Caplan: “From LSU as an undrafted free agent, he will have a chance to push. There is room for someone to be on the practice squad, an opening for somebody to shock the world at this position. This guy has good measurables, the tape shows the intensity of which he plays with and he is a pretty sharp guy from what we understand, he just does not have the athletic stuff that tested all that well.”

Defensive Tackle

Mosher: “This is probably the thinnest the Eagles have been up front in a while, especially on the inside. What really surprises me is they do not have someone to play the Jordan Davis head-up over the center role who is built like Jordan Davis.”

Caplan: “They need help here. The good thing is if you are looking at the veteran free agent group, there are still plenty of d-tackles. Quite frankly, they need two of them.”

Safety

Mosher: “This is probably the deepest core of safeties in quite a while, including Sydney Brown once he is healthy. If you talk about Cooper DeJean as a safety, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Reed Blankenship now in the area he belongs.”

Caplan: “They have bodies, but Gardner-Johnson has a significant injury history, Blankenship has had his injuries, Brown is coming off a major knee injury.”
