Returning to Form

First Eagles Practice Following Preseason Week 1

by

PHILADELPHIA — Following an off-day, the Eagles returned to the practice field Monday afternoon. The practice was of the lighter variety, in shells and shorts and categorized as “yellow,” as the team prepares for a set of joint practices later this week in Foxborough with the Patriots.

The following Eagles didn’t participate on Day 12: CB Jakorian Bennett (knee), RB Tank Bigsby (toe), TE Grant Calcaterra (back), CB Jonathan Jones (shoulder), WR Makai Lemon (hamstring), CB Mac McWilliams (groin), OL John Ojukwu (pectoral), RB Dameon Pierce (hamstring), OLB Jose Ramirez (hamstring), CB Shaun Wade (eye/shoulder) and WR Johnny Wilson (knee).

Veteran OLB Jonathan Greenard (pec strain) remains on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Lemon has been sidelined for eight consecutive practices, though it looks as though the rookie receiver is nearing a return to action. As he’s done in recent days before practice, Lemon got some work in on the JUGS machine. He also worked on a side field.

Limited for the Eagles were CB Tariq Castro-Fields (heel), WR Danny Gray (concussion), OLB Keyshawn James-Newby (ankle), WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and S Cole Wisniewski (hamstring).

The rookies Wisniewski and James-Newby returned to practice following extended layoffs, which would appear to bode well for their availability Saturday night in Foxborough.

Transaction note: Before practice, the Eagles signed CB Isaiah Bolden and waived OL Hollin Pierce in a corresponding move. Bolden, 26, was a 2023 seventh-round pick of the New England Patriots. In 2024, Bolden appeared in 14 games. The Jackson State product was most recently a member of the Louisville Kings of the UFL.

Let’s get to the observations.

*The highlight of practice occurred later in the session during an 11-on-11 period. Jalen Hurts launched a deep shot down the middle of the field into double coverage, with WR Quez Watkins his intended target. S Michael Carter II, who had an interception earlier this summer, did a nice job attacking the football and corralling it for the interception. As mentioned before in this space, Carter II has good eye discipline and instincts. He’s made a number of plays on the football this camp.

*Hurts, of course, also made his share of throws in this one. His best might’ve been on an intermediary bullet to WR Hollywood Brown, who settled into the soft spot in coverage. With defenders converging, CB Riq Woolen and S Drew Mukuba were in the vicinity, Brown demonstrated his flair for navigating space in picking up extra yards. Hurts, rolling to his right, muscled in a cross-body throw to WR Elijah Moore and a strike to WR Danny Gray on a slant.

Hurts also, in one instance, held the ball a tick too long and was “sacked” by Jalyx Hunt. DT Moro Ojomo continued to showcase juice from the interior, notching a “sack” of his own. Both defenders have been outstanding this summer.

*Another impressive showing from CB Quinyon Mitchell, who missed Thursday’s practice with a glute injury. The third-year defender perfectly read a throw over the middle to WR Dontayvion Wicks, breaking on the Hurts pass to deny the completion.

*The offensive line configurations on Monday:

First team (L-R): LT Jordan Mailata, LG Landon Dickerson, C Cam Jurgens, RG Tyler Steen, RT Lane Johnson

Second team (L-R): LT Markel Bell, LG Jake Majors, C Willie Lampkin, RG Drew Kendall, RT Fred Johnson

Lampkin, Kendall and Majors continued their shuffle along the interior. Ojukwu, who was sidelined Monday, had recently been working at left guard after repping exclusively at tackle for most of camp.

*I’ve written often about the chemistry between Hurts and TE Dallas Goedert, which manifests with timing-based throws. It’s almost automatic. However, Hurts attempted what appeared to be an easy pitch-and-catch to Goedert, who had nothing but green grass ahead, but the veteran tight end fought the football, juggling it multiple times before it hit the ground.

*Two Eagles defenders came up with notable plays in run support. The first being LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr., who stormed through to meet RB Ja’Quinden Jackson in the hole. The other was S Andre’ Sam, who surged downhill to stick RB Carson Steele. Steele, by the way, logged some work with the first-team offense. Remember, Bigsby was sidelined.

*Wisniewski got at least one first team rep on Monday. He was turned loose on a blitz, knifing through the traffic to get to QB Cole Payton. Speaking of rookie safeties, keep an eye on Kapena Gushiken, who has gotten more work of late. He also repped at gunner early in Saturday’s game.

*Cool post-practice moment: On a far field, LB Chance Campbell was spotted after practice working with UDFA LB Deontae Lawson on technique. Ordinarily, this wouldn’t qualify as notable, but both players are potentially in contention for the same roster spot. Nick Sirianni would be proud.

*Sean Mannion still has an arm. After practice, the Eagles offensive coordinator — and former quarterback — launched some passes to the safety group, who were working on tracking the football:
