Goedert Activated From Reserve/Covid-19 List

TE Returns After 1-Game Absence

(Eagles TE Dallas Goedert should be ready to play vs. Las Vegas on Sunday)

The Eagles on Thursday activated tight end Dallas Goedert from the Reserve/Covid-19 list, a sigh of relief for a team that was suddenly thin at his position.

Goedert, who missed last Thursday’s game against the Buccaneers, rejoined his teammates for practice Wednesday as the Eagles prepare for to play the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. He came out for warmups but was listed on the injury report as out of practice.

When ready, Goedert will be the team’s top tight end after splitting time with veteran Zach Ertz, who was traded Friday to the Arizona Cardinals and also stood to be a free agent in the offseason.

Howie Roseman, the team’s executive vice president of football operations, cited Goedert’s contract-year status as one reason the team moved Ertz to give Goedert, a fourth-year pro and 2018 second-round pick, more playing time and the opportunity to be featured at the position.

“I think it’s become pretty clear to us that going forward we weren’t going to be able to have both those guys,” Roseman said. “And it gives us an opportunity for Dallas to step up and be that No. 1 guy. Really have that opportunity for the first time in his career and play a lot. It gives him the opportunity also to put his stamp as a leader on this team, as well as the guys behind him.”

Goedert has played 68 percent of the team’s snaps this year, a number that should jump in the coming weeks. In 2020, he played 77 percent of the snaps, mainly because Ertz missed five games because of an ankle injury.  Goedert and rookie free agent Jack Stoll are the only tight ends on the 53-man roster. Undrafted rookie Tyree Jackson, a former University of Buffalo quarterback, is in the 21-day practice window after starting the season on Injured Reserve.

The Eagles re-signed veteran tight end Richard Rodgers to the practice squad to join recent tight end pickup Noah Togiai, who was among the team’s four practice-squad protections for this week.
