‘Big Challenge’

ITB: How Quickly Can Hurts Adjust to New Offense?

by

The Philadelphia Eagles will enter the 2024 training camp with major changes to be expected on both sides of the ball.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher identified the biggest camp storylines to watch.

Geoff Mosher: “The big thing is this: with fewer practices and less time, it is more difficult for quarterbacks to learn a new offense and then go and see it out on the field. This will be a big challenge for Jalen Hurts and for Kellen Moore to learn Hurts and to be able to get on the same page.”

Adam Caplan: “It’s another new offense for Hurts. He has been through a lot learning schemes. The route combinations are going to be different, the structure of the offense is going to be different, they’ll keep some stuff that Hurts likes, but the bottom line is it’s Kellen Moore’s offense.”

Right Guard

Caplan: “I think you can pencil in Tyler Steen, but (Mekhi) Becton was taking right guard snaps before the media knew about it. We will learn on Wednesday where Becton lines up. If he is getting snaps at right guard, watch out.”

Mosher: “The first thing we will have to see is what weight Becton comes in at…Steen has the same pathway Jurgens had, didn’t play much in his rookie year so he had a whole year to sit and learn the (Jeff) Stoutland way, whereas Becton is just starting to play this position for the first time. I feel like you have to handicap it as heavily favored towards Tyler Steen.”

Inside Linebacker

Mosher: “The Eagles survived for a while on substandard linebacker play, but last year you really saw what happens when you don’t have the right pieces against the best teams. If the Eagles are going to get to a Super Bowl, they are going to have to defend the middle of the field way better this year.”

Caplan: “I’m expecting this room to be better, more athletic but they have to play with better discipline.”

Cornerback

Mosher: “They have two young corners that they drafted very high in Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, they took a flier on Isaiah Rodgers, they drafted Kelee Ringo in the fourth round and got him on the field a little bit at the end of last year. Don’t forget about Josh Jobe and Eli Ricks.”

Caplan: “Depth is not about numbers, it’s about actual performance, but on paper it is definitely better. Where is Cooper DeJean going to line up? With Mitchell the only concern is at some point you are going to have to play man coverage.”

Defensive Tackle

Caplan: “They are the only NFL team to not have a vested veteran at defensive tackle. It’s nice to be young, but they have a bunch of unproven guys. That’s a big gamble right there.”

Mosher: “We already have had the conversation that this a big year for Jordan Davis and now Jalen Carter also has to show that he is not a rotational player, he is a starter, has to be dominant from start to finish, and can Milton Williams also handle more playing time?”
