ITB: Eagles Make Multiple Moves Following Season Opener

by

Following cutdowns, the Philadelphia Eagles’ executive vice president/general manager Howie Roseman vowed the team wasn’t done piecing together the roster. That has certainly held true.

On Friday, the team added veteran pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith, bolstering its contingent of outside linebackers. Most recently, on Monday evening, news broke that the Eagles acquired third-year running back Tank Bigsby from the Jacksonville Jaguars, in exchange for 2026 fifth- and sixth-round picks, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Bigsby (5-11, 215), a 2023 third-round pick, has accumulated 910 rushing yards and nine touchdowns — along with 60 receiving yards — over 34 career appearances. In the Jaguars’ season opener, Bigsby carried five times for 12 yards. His jettisoning creates a path for fourth-round pick Bhayshul Tuten to assume a larger role behind starter Travis Etienne.

The addition of Bigsby, along with Montrell Johnson Jr. to the practice squad, occurs on the heels of a ribs injury that sidelined second-year running back Will Shipley for the entirety of the second half in Thursday’s opener. It’s worth noting that Bigsby, 24, also doubles as a kick returner, where he’s yielded 314 yards on 11 career returns.

In Philadelphia, Bigsby joins a running back room that includes Saquon Barkley, A.J. Dillon, and Shipley.

As for Smith, the 33-year-old furnishes a thin edge rusher room behind starters Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt. A fourth-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, Smith accrued 69 career sacks and 173 quarterback hits during his time with the Ravens, Packers, Vikings, Browns and Lions. The 6-foot-4, 275-pound instantly becomes the group’s most accomplished sack artist and projects to serve as third in the rotation once fully onboarded. Roseman secured the best available pass-rusher on the market in an early season move that could pay dividends.
