ITB: Major Coaching Decisions, Free Agency Await Super Bowl Champs

by

While the Philadelphia Eagles will celebrate their Super Bowl LIX victory for a little bit longer, major decisions soon wait for the team.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan dove into staff changes and upcoming free agents.

Doug Nussmeier

Geoff Mosher: “We reported quite a while ago that [Kellen Moore] would take Doug Nussmeier with him. Nussmeierwill be the non-playcalling offensive coordinator, as we understand it”

Adam Caplan: “Not that the Eagles are going to do this, but you can block if it’s not a promotion.”

Kevin Patullo

Caplan: “This is yet another coordinator change for Jalen Hurts. This is going to be his fifth different playcaller. I was asking some coaches I know around the league and they all mentioned Kevin Patullo.”

Mosher: “You have already seen some panic about the Eagles once again promoting in-house, which is an understandable panic because it is the same move they made when they made Brian Johnson the offensive coordinator and 2023 and then made Alex Tanney a first time quarterbacks coach to work with Jalen. Now you’re going to see Kevin Patullo, who is a Nick Sirianni guy.”

Caplan: “I had a very strong coaching source who told me over the weekend that they’ll run Kellen’s scheme. They don’t want to go back…Patullo, as I understand it, has worked very closely with [Jalen Hurts]. This will be their fifth year together. He was definitely involved in Jalen’s breakout season in ’22, so there’s no reason to change it up here. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t happen.”

Milton Williams

Caplan: “At least a half dozen personnel people I know around the league all love Milton Williams. The guy really has no weakness…I would bet game-to-game, the Eagles have graded out Williams as their best defensive player over Jalen Carter.”

Mosher: “If not, it’s close. His run defense is far better.”

Mekhi Becton

Caplan: “I would be surprised if he’s back, not that they wouldn’t want him back. But then Tyler Steen’s a backup again and they drafted him specifically to be their right guard.”

Mosher: “I think his market will be selective. I don’t think he’d be the right type of signing for a team that has a terrible offensive line. I feel like he’d fit on a team that’s good and has some money.”

Zack Baun

Caplan: “To me, Zack Baun’s value is more for the Eagles than it would be for another team because they understood how to use him. No other team looked at him as an inside ‘backer. Wherever he goes, I don’t see him signing less than Patrick Queen’s $13 million a year.”
