Eagles Pick Up New Pass Rusher
In the wake of losing defensive end Brandon Graham for the season due to a torn triceps, the Eagles were proactive in attempting to mend the void, claiming veteran Charles Harris off waivers via the Carolina Panthers. Harris, 29, was a first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2017, the year in which the Eagles selected another player at his position in Derek Barnett. Harris, who has appeared in 99 career games (36 starts), played in nine games (six starts) for the Panthers this season, registering three sacks and accounting for 66% of the team’s defensive snaps. The Eagles will be his fifth NFL team.
Head Coach Nick Sirianni on Tuesday spoke on Graham:
“I can’t say enough good things about [Brandon Graham] BG. I think you guys have asked me this a couple times, and everybody and every workplace needs a Brandon Graham. His energy is contagious. If you’re having a bad day and you get around him, he can turn your day positive. Obviously, the [type of] player [he is] speaks for itself and the play on the field. He was having a great year.
“I just can’t say enough about him as a leader, as a captain, as a teammate. And I’ve said this a bunch: When I first got the head-coaching job, to have [former Eagles DT Fletcher Cox] Fletch, and [Former Eagles C] Jason (Kelce), and [T] Lane (Johnson), and BG, four guys that were 10-plus year Eagles on the offensive and defensive line, really made the transition from coordinator to head coach a lot easier because of who they are as captains and people. And BG is right there at the top of the list.
“He means a lot to me, and I just can’t say enough good things about BG.”
While it is impossible to replace Graham’s leadership and production on and off the field at this stage of the season — given the circumstances — the Eagles made the best of a dire situation, adding an experienced player who has proven he can still produce. Look for Harris, who joins an EDGE group that includes Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith and rookie Jalyx Hunt, to initially begin as a spotty contributor as he familiarizes himself with Vic Fangio’s system. It’s also worth noting that Bryce Huff, who underwent a procedure last week for his injured wrist, has an opportunity to return for the stretch run, perhaps bolstering a thin room.
In other Eagles news, the team signed defensive end K.J. Henry to the practice squad, while releasing both DT Siaki Ika and WR Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint from the practice squad. Henry, selected by the Commanders in the fifth-round in 2023, brings with him some experience having appeared in 14 games (three starts) over stints with the Commanders, Bengals and Cowboys. His resume includes 22 tackles (five for loss), three quarterback hits and a pair of passes defended. Also on the practice squad are fellow pass rushers Tarron Jackson, a 2021 draftee, and Ochaun Mathis, who was added last week.
