GETTY IMAGES: Eagles bring back CB Avonte Maddox on a one-year deal.

Maddox was released by the team in the week before the start of the league new year to avoid a $9.6 million cap hit and $7 million due in cash.

While he is considered one of the best slot corners when healthy, the 28-year-old was unable to stay on the field due to injury, playing in just 13 total games over the last two seasons.

Thus, the Eagles released their 2018 fourth round draft pick to allow both sides to explore other opportunities, with the potential of a reunion on a cheaper deal if neither side could find a desirable option. Maddox reportedly visited the Saintsbut did not come to a contract agreement.

In the opening two weeks of free agency, the only move Philadelphia made at the corner position was the signing of Tyler Hall, a slot CB who has been on and off several rosters and practice squads over a four-year career, most recently with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Bringing back safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson also gives the team a versatile option in the slot in the event of injury. The lack of depth was a significant contributor to the downfall of the defense following Maddox tearing a pectoral muscle that kept him out for most of the 2023 season.
