In a final two-part analytics series summarizing the Eagles’ blowout of the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, we examine where the Eagles’ defensive effort rated in terms of efficiency, the difference between Jalen Hurts and Patrick Mahomes in advanced passing data, the pass-rush win rates, and some mind-blowing overall advanced metrics.

Aggregate Team Stats

Pass Catchers and Pass Defense

  • Cooper Dejean hit a max speed of 21.31 MPH, which was the fastest by a defensive player as a ball carrier the entire season including playoffs according to NextGenStats
  • Devonta Smith played 70.0% of his snaps in the slot, but his biggest play came from the Z position (46 yard touchdown); according to NextGenStats only had a 27.2% chance of completion and at 20.72 MPH (third fastest in the SB)
  • AJ Brown (40.03) and Devonta Smith (40.82) both had approximately 40% target shares and combined for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns
    • This is impressive considering that Smith (2.22 yards) and Brown (1.56 yards) were held at an average separation rate lower than the league average of 2.98
  • Notably Mahomes did not target the left side of the field deep at all, which is where Quinyon Mitchell played predominantly; Quinyon Mitchell was targeted 4 times, allowing 3 catches for 22 yards (7.3 yards / rec) 

Team Stats

    • Eagles trailed for 6 minutes the entire postseason (2.5% of the postseason)
    • The Eagles are the first Super Bowl Champion with more rushing yards (3,866) than passing yards (3,820) in a season (including playoffs) since the 1975 Steelers
    • 145 points is the single most points in postseason history
    • Jake Elliot had most points scored by a kicker in Super Bowl History with 16
  • Saquon Barkley Leading rusher in regular + post season at 2,504

 

Eagles Offense

  • The Chiefs blitzed 12 times, generating 3 pressures, 25% pressure rate on blitzes which was their third lowest all season

  • Chiefs affected 33.33% of the Eagles passing plays with pressure, which is their 8th lowest pressure rate and the 5th lowest allowed by Philadelphia
  • The Eagles offense average 0.499 EPA added per play, which is the highest mark that the Chiefs allowed with their starters playing
  • Philadelphia generated 0.12 EPA per play* when blitzed, the fourth-worst performance for KC this season – their average was -0.08 on the season
  • Overall Hurts finished with an EPA/dropback of 0.51 which is the greatest of all time in the Super Bowl, with Brady and Foles trailing at 0.47
  • Hurts finished with a 77.3% completion percentage, which is 12.6% higher than his expected completion percentage.
