Sources: Senior Offensive Assistant Won’t Return
The first domino of the Eagles’ offseason has fallen.
At least one of the team’s offensive coaches won’t be returning in 2021. Senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello, hired last offseason to help improve the offense, will not be back as the Eagles are allowing his contract to expire, multiple sources told Inside The Birds’ Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan.
The team hasn’t yet announced Scangarello’s departure or issued any statements on the fate of any coaches although head coach Doug Pederson has acknowledged defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz’s plans to not return.
Scangarello, who coached under Kyle Shanahan before becoming Broncos offensive coordinator in 2019, joined the Eagles’ staff last year as part of a wave of coaches hired to help improve an offense that ranked 12th in points scored and 14th in total yards.
Scangarello’s experience coaching under Shanahan was supposed to bring Shanahan-style concepts of motion and misdirection to Pederson’s offense, but Pederson also said his offense wouldn’t look much different than past seasons and the team’s use of motion and misdirection varied during the season.
Instead of improving, the Eagles’ offense sunk to 26th in the league in points scored and 24th in total yards. Carson Wentz lost his starting quarterback job after 12 games. After the season, Pederson said it was important that his voice was the loudest and most significant voice in the offensive classroom.
Pederson on Monday also said this week would involve evaluations of his coaching staff, which means more changes could be made, especially in light of reports that owner Jeffrey Lurie was disgusted with his team’s offensive performance during the season.
Other coaches brought in last year after the firing of offensive coordinator Mike Groh and wide receivers coach Carson Walch were senior offensive consultant Marty Mornhinweg, passing game analyst Andrew Breiner, and wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead. Also, quarterbacks coach Press Taylor had “passing game coordinator” added to his title and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland was named running game coordinator.
