Eagles veteran linebacker Myles Jack, who signed about two weeks ago when the team scrambled to improve its linebacker situation, has decided to retire, per an NFL Media report.

GETTY IMAGES: Myles Jack has reportedly retired just two weeks after signing with the Eagles.

Jack, who worked with the first team immediately upon arrival, had quickly descended down the depth chart and in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Browns was still playing late in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, veteran Zach Cunningham – signed on the same day as Jack – has begun to pull away in the competition to start alongside Nakobe Dean.

On the day both signed, sources told ITB that Cunningham, a tackling machine throughout his career who missed 10 games last year because of elbow injuries, would have the inside track over Jack, who started 15 games last year for the Steelers but was released with major question marks about the status of his knees.

Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan explained in this video why Cunningham’s length, experience and run-stopping range gave him the best chance to get into the starting lineup, or when the Eagles are in their run defense:

Dean, Cunningham, Nic Morrow and Christian Elliss appear to be the favorites for the off-ball linebacker spots on the Eagles’ 53, assuming the Eagles keep four. Rookie free agent Ben VanSumeren is also pushing for a spot.

As for other injuries, wide receivers Britain Covey and Quez Watkins remained out Sunday with hamstring injuries, and second-year outside linebacker was out after undergoing an appendectomy.

Here’s the entire list:
