ITB: What to Expect from Eagles Backups in Week 18

by

The 13-3 Philadelphia Eagles have earned the luxury of sitting many key players in Week 18 against the New York Giants.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan dove into who will get playing time in the regular season finale as well as the team’s Pro Bowlers.

Saquon Barkley

Geoff Mosher: “I still think it’s a no-brainer not to play the guy because it’s all about winning the Super Bowl. Some players are really good, but you can win without. The Eagles are foundationally this year built around Saquon Barkley.”

Adam Caplan: “I talked to a former general manager who is with another team now…he said there is no way I would play [Saquon]. It’s not just injury for him, it’s the other 10 starters that have to play.”

Mosher: “This offensive line has been banged up and they have not had a break since Week 5, so it’s not just about Saquon. They need to refresh and be healthy.”

Cam Jurgens

Caplan: “He’s a little bit bigger physically than (Jason) Kelce, he’s a terrific athlete, a former tight end, but I just didn’t think he’d be this well ahead of schedule. To play this well, he deserved to be a Pro Bowler.”

Zack Baun

Caplan: “It’s a good story. In the history of our show, I can’t remember a less likely scenario than Zack Baun becoming a Pro Bowler, let alone a really good football player. He has never been a starter in his life at an NFL level.”

Mosher: “I can’t even think of a comparison from an Eagles standpoint: a guy who played at such a high level that you had very little expectations for. You didn’t even know if he was going to make the team going into camp.”

Tanner McKee

Mosher: “I do wonder if they’ll let him have the whole game. I would, personally, but they do have Ian Book there if they want to play him as well. You have to remember everybody around McKee is going to be a backup too and in the preseason when he had backups around him, this past preseason wasn’t as good as his first preseason.”

Caplan: “I just hope they can protect him because McKee doesn’t move that well, but man he can spin it.”

Defensive Tackles

Mosher: “Thomas Booker and Moro Ojomo will be your interior guys. Those guys have played minimal snaps this year, but when they’re in the game, you notice them. This will be an opportunity for them to really showcase themselves over an entire game.”

Caplan: “Ojomo has had a good season. Here’s the thing though, he’s always their first defensive lineman off the bench so they have to be careful.”
