Finally Fangio?
Eagles Reportedly Targeting Legendary DC
In the midst of a press conference for Philadelphia Eagles Executive Vice President Howie Roseman and Head Coach Nick Sirianni, a report for their plan at the vacant defensive coordinator spot has come to surface.
Per ESPN, the Philadelphia Eagles are expected to bring in Vic Fangio, currently with the Miami Dolphins, as their new DC.
The Dolphins and Vic Fangio have mutually agreed to part ways, sources tell me and @JFowlerESPN. Fangio now will be the top target for the Philadelphia Eagles to hire as their defensive coordinator, and a deal is expected. Fangio spent 2022 as an unofficial consultant for the Eagles.
Though he would have made sense as the replacement for the departing Jonathan Gannon at the time following the 2023 Super Bowl, the late timing of Gannon’s hiring as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals came after Fangio already agreed to become defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, which he served for a one season.
A successful coach in the NFL since the 1980s, Fangio’s defense has ruled the league over the past few seasons, hence why the Eagles hired Sean Desai, who worked with him for the Bears in 2015-18, to run a version of this scheme.
With Desai demoted after 11 games and fired at the conclusion of the season, the Eagles will seemingly elect to go with architect of the defense himself.
Fangio has coordinated top defenses for multiple decades, including the mid-90’s Carolina Panther teams that made the NFC Championship in the second year of their existence, the early 2010s San Francisco 49ers team that made the Super Bowl, and the 2018 Chicago Bears. He was also the head coach for the Denver Broncos from 2019-21.
When asked about the report at his presser, Sirianni would not confirm, but instead deflected to discussing the process and the amount of qualified candidates they have spoken to.
On @AdamSchefter report re: Vic Fangio to #Eagles DC, Nick Sirianni: "We got a lot of good targets we're working through, a lot of guys who've done well in their interview process."
My take: Seems like he's just being respectful to those he's interviewed, plans to interview. pic.twitter.com/7TlLhJLHjI
