ITB: What Metchie Means for Eagles Depth

by

Reinforcements are coming for the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive depth chart after a poor showing against the Cleveland Browns.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher provided intel on the John Metchie III trade and the second week of preseason.

Adam Caplan: “It wasn’t that they needed another receiver, but Ainias Smith didn’t really play last season, Darius Cooper has been the darling of camp but hasn’t played, Terrace Marshall Jr. has playing experience, Avery Williams hasn’t done anything as a receiver, Elijah Cooks just got back, he didn’t play, Johnny Wilson has only had one year of playing experience. Behind the top three, what do you have here? You never turn down an upgrade.”

Geoff Mosher: “You’re getting rid of a guy who you’re clearly sold on not making the team and you have an opportunity for a guy who could possibly if he balls out.”

Caplan: “Being that they made the trade, it’s likely he’ll make the team. It’s not a lock, there’s no guaranteed money.”

Dorian Thompson-Robinson

Mosher: “The issue with DTR, even though he had some really nice camp practices, now you have him in a game environment and seeing a different defense, and his pocket poise and awareness, or lack thereof, really stands out in these moments.”

Caplan: “The coaching term is feel it, don’t see it. You have to have a sense of timing and you don’t want to ever see the rush, you want to feel it, and he just didn’t do a good job of it.”

Azeez Ojulari

Caplan: “Azeez has not looked particularly great this summer, but looking at my notes he had at least three quality rushes and one sack…This needed to happen.”

Mosher: “Ojulari hasn’t been awful, he has just been invisible, but he certainly came through.”

Drew Mukuba

Caplan: “We know he had the two big plays: the pick six and the fumble recovery, but the thing with him is he plays downhill. He can play nickel, he can cover, he had five picks last year [in college]. This kid’s a player. Second round picks typically don’t sit if they’re mentally ready. He’s a better football player than (Sydney) Brown.”

Mosher: “If anyone thought that Brown won this competition because Mukuba was out for a bit, nope.”
