OTA Overhaul?

The NFL offseason as we know it may change with a massive overhaul to the practice schedule.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher discussed the proposal to eliminate OTAs in favor of an extended training camp and drafted an all-NFC East defense.

OTA Proposal

Adam Caplan: “Let’s say the offseason program starts in mid-to-late June…what it sounds like is they would eliminate the May OTAs. There would be some sort of workouts leading up to training camp, what we don’t know is if there would be a break in between. With this proposal, training camp would be longer. Coaches would love that.”

Geoff Mosher: “The owners will say yes, not because this is the best interest of the players and the sport and the coaches. The owners will say yes because in the end, it gets them closer to an 18th game and more money…this would be terrible for rookies and even some newcomers. You get a new coaching staff and playbook, and then you have March, April, May, June and not doing anything with it until you report.” 

Caplan: “The thing you worry about is the backend of the roster players. If this winds up passing, you may not know about the guys on the back of the roster. If T.J. Edwards didn’t get the May OTAs, that is less work to show their coaches.”

Mosher: “The only thing that could neutralize your fear is let’s say they start this thing on July 1st and the first two weeks are just for rookies and fringe players. That is probably better than OTAs because the Eagles do six or seven of them and they are spread out.”
