ITB: Are One-Year Deals Contributing to Team Success?
The latest signings by the Philadelphia Eagles remain very much in line with the team’s recent free agent philosophy.
On “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher discussed the team’s newest additions and the acquisition methods of Eagles’ personnel chief Howie Roseman.

Dameon Pierce
Adam Caplan: “Dameon Pierce was really good year one and then he completely fell off under Bobby Slowik…He completely fell off, went to the Chiefs, it didn’t happen for him. He’s a long-shot to make the team. To me, he has to beat out Will Shipley.”
Geoff Mosher: “He proved himself in a certain type of scheme, has not fared as well since. For whatever reason, the Eagles have been really bullish on keeping four running backs on their 53. AJ Dillon collected dust as their fourth running back for all of last season, same thing with Rashaad Penny a couple of years ago.”
Stone Smartt
Caplan: “This guy was a quarterback at Old Dominion and he got moved to tight end in his last season. He is Tyree Jackson…This is the upside: he could be a move tight end and maybe if he kicks ass and they don’t re-sign (Grant) Calcaterra, maybe he takes over Calcaterra in ’27.”
Geoff Mosher: “I’m intrigued. Does he come in and give Calcaterra a little run for his money?”
Howie Roseman
Mosher: “The Eagles have gotten to the point, and this is to their credit, they don’t have a middle class. They have a lot of guys on huge contracts because of their creative way they’re able to sign guys, use void years, keep a lot of really good players. And then they fill in the holes with draft picks and guys on one-year deals. There have been a couple of one-year deals that you can look at through the history and say those really worked out, but more or less they usually don’t.”
Caplan: “The level of player [free agents signed] comparatively is way better than last year. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but the quality of the player is way better and they have spent way more.”
