“Not Some Dude Just Running:” Q&A With Quintin Mikell, Jason Avant

by

Chris Simms, a former NFL quarterback and current NFL analyst for NBC Sports, is in hot water with Eagles fans for recently publishing his top-40 quarterback list, which didn’t include Jalen Hurts.

Simms fueled the fire recently when he appeared as a guest on 94.1 WIP with Howard Eskin to defend his list and remarked that Hurts’ throwing motion lends to inaccuracy, adding that Hurts missed some throws that Simms would expect a good high school quarterback to execute.

The full interview can be heard here:

In the latest Q&A on Inside The Birds, featuring former Eagles safety Quintin Mikell and former Eagles wide receiver Jason Avant, Simms’ ranking and comments were refuted,

“If anybody watched Jalen Hurts … the one thing you will know is the kid is accurate,” said Avant, who was an assistant wide receivers coach for the Eagles last year. “He’s not just some dude running around, scrambling with the ball. Does he mess up because he don’t know something right now? Yes, that’s what young players do. But don’t tell me he’s inaccurate.

“[Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is not inaccurate. Daniel Jones gets confused. He gets startled by the rush. Tell me something of that nature, that’s substantive.”

Added Mikell: “To me, the thing that’s the most frustrating is there was no proof. I didn’t see a video clip of Hurts not being able to make this throw. I didn’t see any stats associated with his statement. It really just stuck out as …I don’t like this guy and I don’t like where he’s at so I’m going to try to cut him down. If you’re going to make a statement like that, at least gave some stats, at least have some video clips, a least have something to back it up other than, ‘I know high school quarterbacks who can make that throw.'”

Other topics Mikell and Avant addressed: Better Eagles running back – Brian Westbrook or LeSean McCoy; Chip Kelly’s predictable offense; why coaches like football players who came from humble beginnings; and the Super Bowl team.
