Inside The Birds: Sanders Injury ‘Nothing To Worry About’

by

When the Eagles added Miles Sanders to the growing list of players out indefinitely at training camp with injuries, panic surged across the Delaware Valley about the health of the team’s dynamic running back, the state of the overall running back position, and the state of the team’s health.

The list had already included Javon Hargrave and Derek Barnett.

But in the latest Inside The Birds podcast, Eagles Insiders Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher""> urged listeners to relax and reported that the injuries aren’t overly severe or season-threatening.

“Before we get into injuries I just want to say this to everybody: don’t panic,” Mosher said. “Take a deep breath. It’s going to be OK. These things may sound bad because they’re called ‘week to week’ and ‘upper body’ and ‘lower body,’ but as far as I’m told there’s nothing that is so bad that you’ve really, really got to worry.”

Miles Sanders’ lower-body injury isn’t severe, per ITB.

As for Sanders, Caplan’s sources have told him that the Eagles are just taking the cautious approach with the team’s No. 1 running back and second-year pro.

“The best way to summarize this … if you play fantasy football and you’re drafting Miles Sanders in the first round – or you want to – keep doing it,” Caplan said. “There’s absolutely nothing to worry about. It’s a minor injury.”

On Monday, Eagles coach Doug Pederson echoed a similar sentiment when asked about his running back situation. Pederson downplayed a question about signing another running back in light of injuries to both Sanders and Boston Scott.

“I like where our running backs are,” Pederson said. “I like our running back room. I don’t have any concern there with the guys.”

Other notes from the latest ITB:

On Corey Clement edging Boston Scott for No. 2 RB
Mosher: “I do think he would be your first-down ball carrier, unless Boston Scott just surprises them. I just think they have a role for Boston Scott in mind and it’s gadgety…but when it’s time to just line it up and run the ball and you need a few yards, I feel like that would be Corey Clement.”

Caplan: “Clement is a tough, inside grinder who’s got great vision, he’s got tremendous versatility. No one knew that he would be the factor that he was in ’17. This is it for him. He’s got a great opportunity.”

On the backup quarterback situation
Caplan: “Let me address Jalen Hurts, because he’s doing well. What they’re doing with him is they’re moving him. He’s not a stationary quarterback. They’re having him throw on the run. He’s off to a good start.”

“Nate Sudfeld has been wildly inconsistent. It’s the same stuff Geoff as last summer – you see the arm strength, his athleticism is really improved – but for some reason he’s not the aggressive thrower he once was. He’s clearly not getting a clear picture, because if he was, he’d throw it.”

Mosher: “The problem that I see for the Eagles is … we’ve both been told that Jalen Hurts has looked good. I think we both understand also though that Jalen Hurts being the backup quarterback to start the year is not what the team wants.”

On offensive line backups
Caplan: “My sense is … the top backup guard will be Matt Pryor, the top backup tackle – drum roll please – is going to be [Jordan] Mailata. That’s just my sense, from what I’ve heard.”

On defensive scheme changes
Caplan: “I do know this – you’re gonna see some stuff you’ve never seen before from Jim Schwartz.”

On the starting CB opposite Darius Slay
Caplan: “First of all, Avonte Maddox is starting. You can put it in pencil. Not in pen, because you never know. Maddox is your starter opposite Slay. They don’t need to name it. I’m naming it for them. Maddox is starting, it’s just what I think and what I know. Let’s talk about Sidney Jones for a second. The word on the street is … he’s been inconsistent. He’s healthy. There’s been no injuries. You see flashes of good stuff but the other stuff is just inconsistent.”
