If Ya Can’t Beat ‘Em… : Birds Ink QB They Toppled In ’20

Nick Mullens, the former 49ers quarterback who was one of just four quarterbacks the Eagles defeated last year, has agreed to terms with Eagles, the team announced Monday.

The former Southern Miss quarterback has played 19 games, starting 16, and is 5-11 in his career as a backup who signed in 2018 as an undrafted rookie. His experience in a West Coast offense under Kyle Shanahan makes him an ideal fit as a No. 3 quarterback for the Eagles, who last week waived undrafted free agent quarterback Jamie Newman.

With training camp set to begin July 27, the Eagles current have expected starting quarterback Jalen Hurts followed by backup Joe Flacco and third-stringer Mullens, who went 2-6 last year starting in place of an injured Jimmy Garropolo.

Adam Caplan of Inside The Birds was first to report last week that Mullens was among a select few quarterbacks the Eagles were interested in signing, along with former Rams quarterback Sean Mannion.

Mullens spent his rookie year and the start of his 2019 on the 49ers’ practice squad until Garropolo’s ACL injury in 2019 prompted the 49ers to sign Mullens to the 53-man roster.

Mullens is coming off an elbow injury from December that was initially thought to require Tommy John surgery but, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, turned out to be less extreme but still needed surgery to repair.

The Eagles could add another arm before the start of training camp as teams typically take three or four quarterbacks into training camp.
