“Best Roster In NFL”

Gunn On One: Ray Didinger Sees Greatness In 2023 Birds

by

Even in retirement, Ray Didinger is happy to discuss the Philadelphia Eagles organization he covered for several decades as a reporter for the Philadelphia Daily News.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame journalist talked with Derrick Gunn for “Gunn On One” on Inside The Birds about several Eagles topics, including this year’s 7-1 team that Didinger feels is the best overall Eagles team he’s ever seen.

And he felt that way since training camp.

“Last year in most poeples’ minds, they overachieved by having the kind of season they had, going all the way to having a halftime lead at the Super Bowl. I don’t think any of us forecasted that,” Didinger told Gunn in the discussion.  “But coming into this year, I think the realization was, you know, this team is really good.

“I think you and I were talking before the season started and I said I think it’s the best roster in the NFL and I’ve never said that about an Eagles team going into the season. But there’s no question they have a lot of talent. And you get the feeling this coach really has both hands on the wheel.”

Didinger talked to Gunn about several topics, including the legacies of Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and of Howie Roseman, the team’s executive vice president of football operations; along with the Eagles receiving tandem of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, the fate of the “tush push,” the future of the NFL and … is Didinger truly retired?

“At the time that I made my decision I was 75, which is not young,” said Didinger, a Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame inductee and five-time Pennsylvania Sportswriter of the Year. “I had been doing the job for 53 years. It just felt like, I’m really happy with what I’ve done. There’s nothing I would have rather done.”
