Hurts Status Uncertain Vs. Jets

Sirianni: Minshew Could Get Starter Reps This Week

by

The availabilities of several Eagles, including starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, for Sunday’s game against the Jets remained cloudy as the team convened Wednesday at the NovaCare Complex.

Hurts would be at practice Wednesday, head coach Nick Sirianni, but Wednesday’s session is a walk-through practice, like Wednesday practices have been for the past few weeks. Hurts injured his ankle in Sunday’s 13-7 loss to the Giants but played the entire game.

Nick Sirianni said backup QB Gardner Minshew might get starter reps at practice this week

“We’re hopeful,” Sirianni said. “He’s feeling good. He’s getting better every day. We’re excited that we’re gonna have him out at walkthrough today.”

Sirianni also said he wasn’t sure if Hurts would be able to take all reps when the team ramps up work on the field at Thursday and Friday practices. It’s possible backup Gardner Minshew sees an expanded practice role and takes first-team snaps this week, Sirianni said.

“Will Jalen take every rep this week? I don’t know how that’s gonna play itself out yet,” Sirianni added. “So we’ll see how that goes throughout the week, but when he’s not in there Gardner will be in there.”

The Eagles’ rushing offense, ranked No. 1 in the NFL, could also be impacted against the Jets as running backs Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders are still nursing injuries, along with center Jason Kelce. Howard sat out against the Giants with a knee sprain and Sanders aggravated the ankle injury that had landed him on injured reserve. Sirianni said Sanders is progressing and added that the team is still waiting to see if Howard can practice this week. Kelce exited the game with a knee injury but later returned.

Howard didn’t participate in practice, according to the team’s injury report, which is based on an estimation if the team had conducted a normal practice instead of a walkthrough. Also listed as a non-participant were running back Boston Scott and wide receiver DeVonta Smith, who each have an illness.

“Miles, he’s continuing to progress,”  Sirianni said. “Jordan, we’ve got to find a little more out as the day goes on. We’ll get more on him [Thursday].

Sirianni said Howard and Kelce wouldn’t be at the walkthrough, but he added that Kelce is doing “good and progressing.”
