Some Cost-Efficient Birds Free Agent Options

by

With the NFL Scouting Combine now in the rearview mirror, the offseason focus now shifts to free agency. While we’ve outlined the challenges ahead for the Eagles as it pertains to retaining their lengthy list of in-house free agents, the anticipation of free agency is also a period to focus on some of the pending free agents around the league who could be viewed as sensible replacements.

Here are some potential free agent fits, from the perspective of expected cost and positional need.

Titans TE Chig Okonkwo could be a cost-efficient replacement if Dallas Goedert exits in free agency.

TE Chig Okonkwo

2025 team: Tennessee Titans

Dallas Goedert might’ve priced himself out of the Eagles’ range on the heels of a career season, and if the 31-year-old isn’t retained, the Eagles will need to account for the vacancy by adding an experienced player at the position (along with a draft pick). Okonkwo, a fourth-round pick in 2022, will be 27 by the start of the 2026 season, has started 42 of his 68, accruing 2,017 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 194 receptions. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound Okonkwo would bring athleticism and run-after-catch ability, but it’s his versatility that’s most intriguing. The Eagles’ offense could be one that maximizes the latter, qualifying as an upside signing. For what it’s worth, Spotrac has Okoronkwo’s estimated market value at around $8 million per year.

TE Charlie Kolar

2025 team: Baltimore Ravens

Had the Packers’ John Fitzpatrick not suffered an Achilles injury in late December, he would have appeared in this space. The Eagles last offseason prioritized the receiving aspect of the position when piecing together the tight end group, an oversight that ultimately contributed to the run game inefficiencies. Expect the 2026 iteration to offer far more variety when it comes to skill set. Kolar falls under the category of blocking specialist who was essentially an extension of the Ravens’ offensive line. Kolar, selected in the fourth round in 2022, was utilized sparsely as a pass catcher in Baltimore, accumulating 409 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 30 receptions over 47 games. It’s Kolar’s tenacity and effectiveness as an inline blocker that makes for an ideal match with the Eagles, a team seeking balance when it comes to reshaping the room.

If the Eagles want depth at OT, Vikings lineman Justin Skule would be an ideal fit who knows the scheme.

OT Justin Skule

2025 team: Minnesota Vikings

Skule, in this case, is viewed similarly to the Kendall Lamm signing last offseason, though with a better expected return on investment. The 29-year-old, who overlapped with Eagles offensive line coach Chris Kuper last season in Minnesota, where he logged nine starts. A sixth round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2019, Skule has appeared in 83 games (26 starts) and could function as the swing tackle on game day if Fred Johnson departs in free agency. Versatility, cost and familiarity with Kuper would serve as the driving forces here, along the Eagles’ lack of experienced depth on the offensive line — which would only be heightened if Johnson and/or Brett Toth test the open market.

CB Cam Taylor-Britt

2025 team: Cincinnati Bengals

The Eagles have some optionality to sort through on the open market, should they seek an upgrade over Adoree’ Jackson. Taylor-Britt figures to garner a modest deal as he aims for a bounce-back season. A second round pick in 2022, Taylor-Britt started 40 of his 47 career games, producing 203 tackles, 38 passes defended, seven interceptions and a pair of forced fumbles. He returned two of his interceptions for touchdowns. Taylor-Britt’s play has been erratic over his four seasons in Cincinnati — and is coming off a challenging 2025 campaign that included a benching and ended with a season-ending foot injury — but perhaps the 26-year-old would benefit from a change of scenery.

CB Joshua Williams

2025 team: Kansas City Chiefs

While not exactly a household name, Williams, a fourth round pick in 2022, served as key secondary depth in his first three seasons before his duties shifted almost exclusively to special teams in 2025. For context, Williams, 26, logged more than 400 defensive snaps twice in those aforementioned three seasons and over 300 in the other. He accounted for only 17 last season, compared to 256 on special teams. The special teams value is important to note, as the Eagles didn’t receive those contributions from holdovers Jakorian Bennett and Mac McWilliams. The lengthy and physical Williams, who boasts impressive measurables at 6-foot-3, 193 pounds, has appeared in 65 games (12 starts) but his defensive production was uneven. Should the Eagles covet low-cost experience at the position and elect to bank on their extensive track record of player development, Williams might be worth a look.
