Becton Bolts
Emergent OG Signs With Chargers
Mekhi Becton, who revived his pro career last season playing right guard for the Eagles, is bolting for the West Coast.
Like several standouts from the Eagles’ Super Bowl championship, the mammoth lineman is exiting via free agency, signing a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Chargers announced the signing late Friday night.

Becton’s departure after one season leaves the Eagles looking for their fourth new starting right guard in the past four seasons.
Third-year pro Tyler Steen will compete with newcomer Kenyon Green, a former first-round pick acquired Wednesday in a trade with the Texans for C.J. Gardner-Johnson, along other candidates for the job.
Steen has played 28 games over two seasons, starting three. Green, picked 15th overall in 2022, struggled during his Texans career, missed an entire season with a shoulder injury, and was in and out of the starting lineup this past season.
Green could be another reclamation project for Eagles offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, considered the best in the business.

Under Stoutland’s tutelage, Becton emerged from a failed first-round offensive tackle picked by 11th overall by the Jets into a quality starter on an elite offensive line that helped the Eagles win its second Super Bowl in franchise history.
He signed a one-year deal with the Eagles after the NFL Draft last April and beat out Steen for the starting job in training camp.
Terms of Becton’s deal weren’t announced, but the Eagles nearly all of their big-ticket free agents to find jobs elsewhere on the market.
Becton became the latest in a mass exodus that includes edge defender Josh Sweat, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and cornerbacks Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers.
The Eagles, who aren’t spending as much up-front cash this offseason, have also traded backup quarterback Kenny Pickett along with Gardner-Johnson, a starting safety.
The team has made several bargain, one-year additions in tight ends Harrison Bryant and Kylen Granson, cornerback Adoree’ Jackson, running back A.J. Dillon, long snapper Charley Hughlett, return specialist Avery Williams, and edge defenders Josh Uche and Patrick Johnson.
Their biggest splurge has been retaining All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun on a blockbuster extension.
