Pack For The Opener

Eagles vs. GB In Sao Paolo

by

How’s this for a kickstart to the 2024 season?

The Eagles will play against Jordan Love and the surging Green Bay Packers on Friday, Sept. 6 in Sao Paolo, Brazil – the NFL’s first game ever played in Brazil and first Friday night game on the season’s opening weekend in more than 50 years.

The Eagles have been designated as the home team at Corinthians Arena, the home for Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians.

GETTY IMAGES: Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie will lose a home game but his team opens its season Friday, Sept. 6, in Sao Paolo, Brazil, vs. Green Bay.

“The match-up between the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles is an extremely exciting moment for the city of São Paulo,” said the city’s mayor, Ricardo Nunes, in a statement released by the NFL.

“These two franchises will certainly play a historic game, bringing great global visibility to our city and assist in our efforts to generate jobs and economic impact.”

The Week 1 game will be streamed on Peacock, part of the NBCUniversal family. It will be aired free on broadcast television for local markets of the two franchises.

The game pits an Eagles team that made the Super Bowl in 2022 and started 2023 at 10-1 before suffering a late-season collapse that led to seven losses in the last eight games, including a 32-9 first-round playoff blowout loss to Tampa Bay, against a Packers team seemingly going in the opposite direction.

In Love’s first year as a starter, replacing legend Aaron Rodgers, the Packers won six of their last eight regular-season games before upsetting the Cowboys in an NFC Wild Card game, 48-32, and then losing to NFC champion San Francisco, 24-21, in the divisional round.

Love passed for 4,159 yards, 31 touchdowns and threw just 11 interceptions as he emerged into one of the game’s rising star quarterbacks.

The Packers (+1900) have the 10th-best odds to win the Super Bowl, per DraftKings, while the Eagles (+1700) are eighth-best, showing how competitive these NFC teams are expected to be in 2024.

The Eagles have added plenty this offseason to remedy their implosion, including the free-agent signings of Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson along with the trade for backup quarterback Kenny Pickett.

The Packers have also been busy this offseason, adding former Giants safety Xavier McKinney and Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs in free agency.
