Self-Scouted
ITB: Where Can Eagles Make Major Improvements?
The Philadelphia Eagles have major questions to answer on both sides of the ball after a 2-2 start to the season.
On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan self-scouted the team following their return from the bye week.
Kellen Moore
Geoff Mosher: “Kellen Moore was brought here to freshen up the offense with more motion, more under center. A lot of people we have spoken to has looked at the tape and said this is not exactly what Kellen Moore has been doing as an offensive coordinator. I think the data shows the Eagles have only play action passed out of under center six times.”
Adam Caplan: “Kellen’s history will show you shifts and motions, which we saw in Week 1. After that, it has looked different.”
Jalen Hurts
Mosher: “The quick game is really vital and instrumental here…now with your full reinforcements soon, they have to figure out a way to be able how to get that ball out of Jalen’s hands, when the flats or the middle of the field are open. Jalen’s a really smart quarterback…the structure should get better and this thing can start to rebuild itself just by doing the little things correctly.”
Wide Receiver
Caplan: “You need quality a backup. Don’t let the drop off from A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith to be so large to where you can’t function.”
Vic Fangio
Mosher: “What I would first try to do is get my corners to play a little more up, because you’re hoping to have a trickle-down effect. If your corners can make the quarterback hold on to the ball or just get to the second read…that might be the difference for your guys to get on the quarterback a little bit more.”
Run Defense
Mosher: “I don’t know how schematically they can be better unless they face a team like the Saints with two tight ends and force Vic to play the jumbo fronts, but they have really had a tough time stopping the run with their normal 4-2 defensive front.”
Caplan: “They could start working Oren Burks in. In the Saints game, they brought (Zack) Baun as an edge defender. That is what they can do, but that’s not going to be their bread and butter.”
