ITB: Latest on Lurie and Hurts

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan dove into Jeffrey Lurie’s press conference at the Owner’s Meetings as well as the current discourse on Jalen Hurts.

Jeffrey Lurie
Geoff Mosher: “From what we know and what we hear, he’s very involved as far as knowing everything that’s going on, understanding football, trying to learn as much as he can. I thought it was just his way of saying he’s obsessed with football, always involved, talks to his players.”
Adam Caplan: “Years ago, he downplayed it. I have never talked to any former coach, front office member, I can’t think of anyone who has a negative thing to say about him.”
Cash Spending
Mosher: “He never really addressed the question of is he starting to not be the guy who is going to be putting out more money than the cap year-to-year, we didn’t really get the full answer on that.”
Caplan: “They spend cash over cap. What they’re doing is building from within. Up until ’21 when Howie (Roseman) really turned his career around in terms of a drafter, he was super obsessed with free agency…There has been a philosophical shift. When you start drafting really well, you become a draft and develop team.”
Jalen Hurts
Caplan: “[A source] said he can be non-trusting. Is it because of what happened at Alabama and getting benched and having to transfer? I don’t know, but he said he’s kind of fearful, not trustful of some people and he wants to do things his way sometimes.”
Mosher: “He stood in front of a microphone after a game one day and said ‘the offense is going to look the way I want it to look.’ I didn’t have a huge issue with it because when you win that way and you do what he has done and are a starting quarterback paid in that echelon, you should have a lot of autonomy and fingerprints on it. However, you should also be judged on it.”
Sean Mannion
Mosher: “This is an important year because Sean Mannion’s offense in the true essence of it is supposed to have the answers built in. The quarterbacks in these offenses typically don’t have to change plays and do a whole lot of checking and audibling. You’re supposed to have a nice marriage between your running game and your play action pass. There will be under center and things asked of Jalen that he in the past has been reluctant to do but we never said he has never done it.”
Caplan: “I asked someone from another team what he knows about Sean Mannion. He said everything he heard is great but you don’t know until he has to get in front of a quarterback. He has to present what he wants to do and the guy has to buy in.”
