‘Best Fit’

ITB: Who Can Take Over Eagles Offense?

by

For the fourth offseason in a row, the Philadelphia Eagles and Head Coach Nick Sirianni once again find themselves searching for an offensive coordinator.

On the latest episode of “Inside The Birds,” Adam Caplan and Geoff Mosher discussed the firing of Kevin Patullo and gave intel on potential coordinator candidates.

Nick Sirianni

Adam Caplan: “Nick has to have a ‘come to Sirianni moment’ with himself. This thing is bad…(Jalen) Hurts has been in the NFL long enough now, it’s now time to have a real NFL offense.”

Geoff Mosher: “He’s at a crossroads here. Does he do what did in the past and just try to make it a little bit better, like he did two years ago when he hired Kellen Moore, or does he go the other route which is a radical redesign where you hire an offensive coordinator that you really like and you let him run his offense no matter what?”

Brian Daboll

Caplan: “The best fit would be Brian Daboll. Daboll is an in-your-face coach. Yes, he imploded with the Giants, but he coached (Jalen) Hurts at Alabama. Talking to multiple coaches who worked with Daboll at the Bills and the Giants, he is outstanding coaching quarterbacks. He’s not a head coach, he’s an excellent schemer and designer. He has combined the (Bill) Belichick run Erhardt offense with modern structure.”

Mosher: “I have run up a couple of flag poles around the league. The whole Hurts-Daboll thing at Alabama can work both ways though. That’s the year that (Nick) Saban pulled the plug on Hurts and went with Tua (Tagovailoa).”

Todd Monken

Caplan: “Lamar Jackson has been an MVP with Todd Monken…[if] you want to run 21 (personnel), run 22, run a lot of 13, he has run it all…This is a guy they should be talking to. He coaches kind of hard from what I have been told.”

Mosher: “I remember when he was the offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay, he threw the ball around, 11 personnel, spread it out. Then he went to Georgia, won a national championship there. Now, he comes to Baltimore and basically keeps the staple of what their identity is: throwing two tight ends on the field, power run, and he was able to adapt to it while also bringing some really good passing game stuff.”

Mike McDaniel

Caplan: “He’s brilliant. The thing with him is he runs the Shanahan offense. Hurts is not a quick decision, timing and rhythm guy. He has shown a little bit as of late, but overall he has not been that guy.”

Mosher: “McDaniel is really good at what he does, but I talk about that fork in the road. If you’re bringing in Mike McDaniel and hiring him, you are going way down to the other way from where you have been. As much as we’re advocating for change, we’re also not saying let’s put him in a Shanahan style offense. But McDaniel can adapt from that.”
