Campbell Signed

Birds First Rounder Inks Deal

by

The Eagles on Wednesday afternoon announced the signing of first-round pick Jihaad Campbell.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Peliserro, the deal is worth just north of $14.9 million.

Campbell, selected with the 31st overall pick in April, is on the mend from pre-draft labrum surgery, though Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp offered an encouraging development.

The Alabama product went through linebacker drills after being previously inactive. In the second OTA practice open to the media, Campbell was spotted working with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on a side field.

Fangio, who last week revealed that Campbell was expected to hit the practice field “sometime in August,” added that Campbell will begin at inside linebacker.

“Well, right now he’s working at ILB because there’s a lot more to learn there,” Fangio said. “So that’s where we’ll start him. He won’t hit the practice field until sometime in August. So, we’re doing all we can. He’s doing all he can in meetings, we’re doing all we can with him on the field.

“I take him to the side and do an individual drill with him that’s suited to what he can do right now. So, he’s working good and trying to pick it up.”

Campbell is expected to fulfill a prominent role on a linebacking corps that also includes the likes of Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Smael Mondon Jr.

Adding to Campbell’s appeal and intrigue is that he also offers pass rush potential, which could evolve in time.

With Campbell now under contract, second-rounder Drew Mukuba is the team’s lone unsigned draft pick.
