Reports: Eagles Add More Coaches

Birds Pluck Army DL Coach, Texans QBs Coach

The Eagles have reportedly landed on a replacement for departed assistant linebackers coach Ronnell Williams, who recently joined the Las Vegas Raiders’ staff to serve as linebackers coach. According to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Eagles are “expected to hire” Army defensive line coach Allen Smith to fill the vacancy.

Smith, a defensive lineman at Wofford (2009-2012), spent the 2025 season coaching the defensive line for Army following a three-year stint at Georgia State in which he held the same title. Smith briefly joined the pro ranks in 2021, functioning as an assistant defensive line coach for the Houston Texans.

Prior to his jump to the NFL, Smith was part of Wofford’s staff, operating as the team’s defensive line coach for three seasons.

In Philadelphia, Smith would join a highly regarded batch of defensive assistants assembled under coordinator Vic Fangio. He’ll team with position coach Bobby King and have a hand in shaping a room ripe with top-end talent in Zack Baun and Jihaad Campbell – and maybe Nakobe Dean, if he doesn’t leave in free agency – as well as intriguing youngsters in Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and Smael Mondon. King, in his two seasons in the role, has established a track record of elevated performance from his room, along with universal development.

While the expected role is new terrain for Smith, it’s an opportunity that gets him back to the next level. It’s worth noting that defensive line coach Clint Hurtt – who in January interviewed for the Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator job –  could garner interest around the league when the next coaching cycle spins back around.

Former Texans QBs coach Jerrod Johnson is reportedly coming to the Eagles in a coaching role.

In other Eagles coaching news, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network on Sunday reported that former Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson is joining the Eagles’ staff in a role that has not yet been determined. Johnson, who interviewed for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator vacancy in 2024, was among 17 candidates who interviewed for the for the same job this offseason that ultimately went to Sean Mannion.

Johnson, 37, spent the past three seasons coaching quarterbacks in Houston. Previously, he was an assistant quarterbacks coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 and an offensive quality control coach for the Indianapolis Colts (2020-21).

Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Johnson enjoyed a productive career as a quarterback for Texas A&M, throwing for 8,011 yards and 67 touchdowns against 27 interceptions over 37 games. In 2011, Johnson signed with the Eagles as a rookie free agent but was waived before final cuts.
