Birds Promote Kasper

Safeties Coach Now Presides Over All DBs, Pass Game Strategy

by

The Eagles acted swiftly when it came to filling the role previously held by defensive backs coach/pass game coordinator Christian Parker, who last week joined the Cowboys’ staff as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Parker’s successor in Philadelphia will be safeties coach Joe Kasper, a league source confirms a report from NFL Media’s Cameron Wolfe.

Kasper, defensive quality control coach for the Eagles in 2021-22, returned to the team in 2024 after spending a season on the Miami Dolphins’ staff in which he presided over the safety room, serving the same role in Philadelphia for two seasons under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

In Philadelphia, Kasper oversaw the development of Reed Blankenship and rookie Drew Mukuba. Veterans C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Marcus Epps also performed well with Kasper at the helm, and younger players, like practice squaders Andre’ Sam and Brandon Johnson, also demonstrated growth.

Joe Kasper moves from safeties coach to DBs coach/defensive pass game coordinator.

“He lets you play,” Johnson said. “It’s not robotic. But I also like the fact that he coaches you hard and he coaches you with a very detailed mentality. So, even the slightest detail, he will coach you up on. And I can appreciate, because even though there’s no such thing as perfection, we want it to be perfect.”

Kasper, a well-regarded assistant and viewed as a bright defensive mind, has garnered plenty of praise from players the past two seasons. His focus on details and fundamentals, in particular, are often lauded.

Kasper, whose coaching career began in 2015 — coaching defensive backs at Mentor [Ohio] High School  — now undertakes an expanded role, overseeing the entire secondary, and his building blocks include All-Pro cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean as well as Mukuba, who’d been coming on prior to his season-ending injury.

With the promotion, the Eagles ensure continuity while also appointing a coach with a demonstrated track record of maximizing and developing talent well-versed in Fangio’s scheme.
