Eagles Have OC Interests

Report: Birds Eyeing Brian Daboll, Mike McDanial

by

The Eagles on Tuesday afternoon made the inevitable decision to make a move at offensive coordinator, removing Kevin Patullo from that title and providing a statement from head coach Nick Sirianni.

As the team presses on in their search for his replacement, there are some important equations to consider: Will the next play caller have full autonomy or will the same philosophical offensive approach remain? What’s the health status of the star-studded offensive line, a unit that was plagued by injuries and affected their ability to perform akin to their reputation?

Then there’s a looming question at wide receiver: What becomes of A.J. Brown? Will he remain in Philadelphia?

While the offseason has merely just begun, these are all relevant questions.

Once coaching for rival NFC East teams, could Eagles HC Nick Sirianni hire former Giants HC Brian Daboll as his OC?

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Eagles have shown interest in two potential Patullo replacements in Brian Daboll and Mike McDaniel.

Daboll, 50, is fresh off a four-year stint as head coach of the New York Giants. His tenure, which also included NFL Coach of the Year honors in 2022, was underwhelming, amounting to a 20-40-1 regular season record. He went 1-1 in his postseason appearances. Daboll originally rose to prominence in Buffalo, where he served as the Bills’ offensive coordinator (2018-2021).

It’s worth noting that not only does Daboll have a connection and rapport with Sirianni after overlapping in Kansas City in 2012, but he also worked directly with quarterback Jalen Hurts at Alabama in 2017. Daboll served as the Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach that season.

Continuity could factor into the decision-making process — Hurts, after all is primed for his seventh play caller at the pro ranks — and if successful, Daboll could once again become a commodity for a head coaching opportunity next cycle.

McDaniel, 42, just finished a four-year head coaching stint of his own with the Miami Dolphins, accumulating a 35-33 regular season record, and 0-2 postseason record. Perhaps most intriguing about McDaniel and his resume is his time spent in San Francisco, where he coached under offensive wunderkind Kyle Shanahan.

McDaniel, a run game coordinator for the 49ers for four seasons before spending his lone season as the team’s offensive coordinator, is a sharp offensive mind with a flair for jazzing up the run scheme. That’s not to slight the pass game prowess of McDaniel, which reveals intricacy and variance.

Schematically, assuming full autonomy, the McDaniel system would be a drastic departure from the norm under Sirianni, but perhaps that’s what’s needed to revive the stagnancy plaguing what should have been a supercharged Eagles offense.
