Inside The Birds: Bodyguard Settling Into Right Guard

by

Both starting offensive tackles for the Philadelphia Eagles were out of practice Monday because of injuries.

But the team isn’t showing any signs of moving Jason Peters back to left tackle.

Peters, who played 16 season at left tackle and made nine Pro Bowls there, continued to see reps at right guard, where he’s moving for the first time in his career to replace injured Pro Bowl lineman Brandon Brooks.

Jason Peters is acclimating to right guard gradually, per Adam Caplan.

Peters’ name hasn’t come up much throughout this crucial camp for the 38-year-old potential Hall of Famer, but Inside The Birds’ Adam Caplan reported on Monday’s ITB podcast that Peters is""> coming along at his new position, albeit gradually.

“What I had heard is that he’s starting to settle in at right guard,” Caplan said. “Not every snap is good. Some aren’t great. But he’s so crafty and smart, he’s starting to understand hand usage. He’s far from perfect. The way it was explained to me is that he’s starting to settle in.

“They aren’t worried about him at all, but I still do think though the first weeks are probably going to be challenging for him in the regular season just because it’s real football.”

Jordan Mailata has worked at left tackle in Andre Dillard’s absence. Matt Pryor has replaced Pro Bowl right tackle Lane Johnson in practice.

The Eagles continue to get Peters reps at right guard as time winds down on training camp. The team will have just one more scrimmage with tackling to the ground before the end of camp.

“They key for him is they’ve got to simulate some [live game] stuff for him,: Caplan continued. “You’ve got to get him used to that contact. At some point he’s got to have guys coming at him in a big way.”

Other notes from the latest ITB:

On wide receivers Jalen Reagor and J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
Mosher: “I was told [Reagor] had some ‘wow’ practices. What they really see from Jalen at practice that they are impressed with is separation at the top of the route.”

Caplan: “[Arcega-Whiteside] is improving. He looks … without better phrasing, I’m just going to say like a different player. He knows the offense, No. 1, and No. 2 is he’s healthy. He’s getting there. He’s not there yet but he’s getting better.

On backup OT Jordan Mailata
Caplan: “Despite some of the reporting that’s out there, or the opinion of some of the media that’s out there, he’s not struggling at all. That’s according to two Eagles sources. He’s still in a learning phase. Remember folks, he couldn’t practice for two weeks because he was on the Covid list. The word I got from a couple people was, he’s just been OK. But that’s expected because he just got back.”

On DE Josh Sweat as the 4th defensive end
Mosher: “I specifically asked about Sweat. I asked, “Is he playing well as an edge rusher or moving inside in nickel where they had him playing at the start of last year?’ I was told as an edge rusher. That’s good. That’s what you want. It’s his natural position.”
